On September 21-23, 2023, ISEC organized an international conference titled “The Liturgies of the Church of Alexandria: From Late-Antique Origins to the Medieval Heritage” at The Catholic University of America. We hosted 22 scholars from all over the world exploring the liturgical heritage of the great city of Alexandria.     Sacred Land: Music and Poems of Resilience From Ukraine

    On June 26, 2023, The Bishop Basil H. Losten Center for Ukrainian Church Studies co-sponsored an event called “Sacred Land: Music and Poems of Resilience From Ukraine.” This was a Ukrainian cultural evening which showcased Ukraine’s rich history through a celebration of centuries of choral music, poetry, and Ukraine’s natural beauty.     Through the generosity of Mr. Dean Shahinian, we kicked off an annual lecture series titled “The Grace and Paul Shahinian Armenian Christian Art and Culture Lecture Series.” The inaugural lecture was on March 23, 2023 at 5 pm (Heritage Hall, The Catholic University of America). The speaker was Prof. Christina Maranci (Harvard University) and the “Armenia and the World in Art and Text”

    On Friday, February 10, 2023, ISEC offered a seminar for our Catholic University of America doctoral students (in theology, Greek and Latin, Early Christianity) on how to produce a critical edition of a Greek text.     On October 31, 2022, Fr. Damaskinos Olkinuora, a monk of Xenophontos Monastery (Mt Athos) and professor at the University of Eastern Finland, offered our graduate students a lecture titled on Byzantine liturgical texts.     On April 12, 2022, ISEC hosted Fr. Eugen Pentiuc of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology who engaged doctoral students from both Biblical and Liturgical Studies in discussing his new book, Hearing the Scriptures: Liturgical Exegesis of the Old Testament in Byzantine Orthodox Hymnography, published by Oxford University Press (2021).     “Christian Law in Seventh-to-Eighth-Century Fars (modern day Iran): Ishoʿbokht and Shemʿon of Rev Ardashir”

    On April 12, 2022, Prof. Emanuel Fiano (Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks, Fordham University) offered a lecture which tackled such topics as the distinction between human and divine law, and whether God gave Christians any secular precepts—contained at the outset of the Legal Codes produced by two seventh-to-eighth-century authors, Shemʿon and Ishoʿbokht of Rev Ardashir, both East-Syriac “Christian Law in Seventh-to-Eighth-Century Fars (modern day Iran): Ishoʿbokht and Shemʿon of Rev Ardashir”

    On March 15, 2022, Fr. John Chryssavgis offered a in honor of Gr. George Alexson, an alumnus of The Catholic University of America. Over 100 people were in attendance.
