Father Mark taught a course called “Ukraine: History, Liturgy and Churches Then and Now” which combined history, theology, and liturgy when addressing Ukraine. His introductory course was offered simultaneously at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and provided the learner with the fundamentals for understanding Ukraine in light of its religious and historical identity. This course provided an overview of the history, liturgy, and churches of Ukraine from the 988 AD baptism by Prince Volodymyr to today. It surveyed the early Christian period, the Union of Brest in 1596 with its subsequent religious and political divisions, the persecution of churches under totalitarianism, and the churches’ role today in light of the invasion as an epicenter of global change.
