On November 1, 2019, ISEC hosted Prof. Claudia Rapp, who lectured on “Manuscripts, Liturgy and Society: Sources for Daily Life and Social History.” Byzantine prayer books (euchologia) contain a vast number of short prayers for particular occasions in the life of a person or in the annual cycle of a community. The lecture offered an introduction to this rich source material, based on the work of the Vienna Euchologia Project, and illustrated its potential to shed new light on social relations within Byzantine society. Prof. Rapp also offered a seminar for our doctoral students on Byzantine Euchologia manuscripts.
